Library Policy and Information for TeachersGENERAL LIBRARY USAGEThe library has many services to offer. The librarians collaborate with teachers on developing class assignments, lesson plans, web quests, and research. Teachers who wish to bring their classes to the library need to fill out an assignment sheet and schedule with one of the librarians. The library can accommodate two classes in the main reading room and one class in the library classroom. Teachers may check out a cart of books for classroom use. Please let us know in advance and we will gladly pull the books for you. We also provide teacher training and assistance for any of the electronic databases provided by the library. Currently, we subscribe to Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL), Grolier Online, Gale Discovering Collection, and United Streaming (classroom videos available over the Internet). At the present time, eighteen computer stations are available for internet and electronic database use. If more than one class is in the library, classes may have to share computer time. One computer station is designated for catalog access. The computer station in the classroom is set up for group instruction and demonstration. Students may make computer copies for a class assignment (three copies are free, additional copies are 10 cents each). Teachers may send as many as four students to the library without coming themselves. During the school day, students must have a class assignment to work on when they come to the library (No “just getting on the internet” to surf). Before sending students to the library, please call to see if we are full or if the computers are being used by another class. A professional development room is available in the library for books and periodicals. This room also has one computer station for intern and teacher use. An A-V production room is available for laminating posters and for production of displays and bulletin boards. The library also provides both plain and copier transparencies and overhead pens for teacher use. Current magazines and newspapers (Knoxville News Sentinel and USA Today) are available. Magazines may be checked out by teachers at the circulation desk and returned as soon as possible. Students are not allowed to bring food or drinks into the library. Internet permission forms are required by Knox County Schools for student internet use. Blank forms are available in the library. Several times a year the library prints out a list of the students who do not have forms on file in the library. Each teacher is responsible for checking to see if his or her students have a form on file before allowing them to access the internet. A-V EQUIPMENT USAGETeachers may check out A-V equipment from the library and are responsible for the protection and security of that equipment. The librarians provide training on using equipment and help with troubleshooting. The library provides bulbs for overheads. Each department is responsible for purchasing blank audio and video tapes, adapters, video-to-TV and computer-to-video connection cords and extension cords for their department. TEXTBOOK USAGETextbooks are stored in subject area departments and are checked out to teachers by their department head. If a teacher needs additional texts for a particular class, they must place the order with their department head. Lost and paid textbook money is collected by Ms. Morris in Guidance. Students must pay for lost books before they are issued new ones. Grades will be held for textbooks that are not returned. Each term teachers need to turn into the library a list of students who do not return texts. Replacement texts are ordered from the school textbook account. If a student loses a text and a replacement copy is needed, the student must pay the full price plus $3.00 for shipping. A textbook inventory with prices is kept in the library.
